ABOUT 

In Power Play, a commanding female figure stands poised with a majorette baton — an object traditionally associated with ceremony, choreography, and spectacle. Here, the baton becomes an instrument of authority, transforming performance into command.

Her oversized belt buckle, emblazoned with a silver dollar, subtly anchors the image within the language of commerce and capital. The baton, adorned with a pearl necklace, merges symbols of refinement and wealth with gestures of control. Through these coded accessories, de Meijer constructs an archetype in which femininity, ambition, and economic power converge.

As in much of her practice, the figure operates less as an individual portrait than as a composite of contemporary aspiration. Power Play examines how authority is staged, negotiated, and visually performed — revealing the complex interplay between empowerment and display within systems shaped by material success.
