ABOUT

In 4th Generation Bill, a Boy Scout stands composed and resolute — a figure drawn from a tradition of civic virtue and moral instruction. His posture conveys quiet determination, evoking inherited ideals of duty, justice, and responsibility.

Rather than depicting an individual child, de Meijer presents an archetype shaped by generational expectation. The uniform becomes both armor and inheritance — a visible marker of values transmitted across time. The title’s reference to “fourth generation” underscores continuity, suggesting a lineage of belief systems passed down and carried forward.

Paired with Eve (Gen Z) as part of a diptych, the work reflects on how young people navigate inherited frameworks within an increasingly complex social landscape. Together, the paintings examine youth not as naïve optimism, but as a site of negotiation between tradition, resistance, and renewal.
