ABOUT THE WORK
X examines the psychological exposure embedded in contemporary digital life. Set against the broader discourse on freedom of expression in open online spaces, the painting confronts the fragile boundary between visibility and vulnerability.
The central figure stands as both defender and target — poised yet exposed. The plastic glove over her heart signals self-protection; the dart in her hand suggests agency and retaliation. Her semi-transparent dress, revealing bones and organs, renders interior fragility visible — a metaphor for the emotional and corporeal exposure of the networked self.
As in much of de Meijer’s work, the archetype embodies a tension: empowerment and susceptibility, assertion and defense. The painting reflects on the cost of participation in digital arenas where identity is both constructed and attacked.
