ABOUT

In Sacred Height, a businessman is seated upon a gleaming golden throne, elevated both physically and symbolically above the viewer. The composition evokes ritual and hierarchy, positioning wealth as a structure of reverence rather than mere accumulation.

His posture conveys authority and composure, yet the translucent cloak draped around him introduces ambiguity. The garment suggests transparency while simultaneously obscuring, rendering visibility partial and controlled. Through this tension between revelation and concealment, de Meijer examines the optics of power in contemporary society.

As in much of her practice, the figure operates as an archetype — a composite embodiment of status and ambition. Sacred Height reflects on the devotional aura surrounding economic success, where elevation becomes sanctified and authority assumes ceremonial form. The painting invites consideration of how power is staged, upheld, and collectively sustained.
