ABOUT

In Mommy’s Non-Fungible Finest, a domesticated cat — gloved, composed, and theatrically staged — appears transformed into a speculative asset. Its posture subtly recalls the assertive stance of the Wall Street bull, evoking the feverish optimism and volatility associated with financial markets.

The animal functions less as subject than as proxy. Through the act of tokenization, ownership is abstracted from intimacy and converted into exchangeable value. The gloves — a recurring motif in de Meijer’s practice — underscore the desire to profit without touch, to generate capital while remaining insulated from material consequence.

Rather than depicting the cat itself, the painting becomes a portrait of its unseen owner and, by extension, a commentary on the cultural moment that produced NFT speculation. Through satire and precise composition, de Meijer exposes a system in which value is performed, amplified, and detached from labor, meaning, or relational depth.
