ABOUT

In Homies, two nearly indistinguishable men ceremonially award each other medals in a closed circuit of mutual validation. Dressed alike and mirrored in posture, they appear less as separate individuals than as reflections within a self-sustaining system of influence.

A single shared set of AirPods — an intimate and faintly absurd detail — binds them further, suggesting synchronized thinking and private alignment within a public display. The staged exchange of honors becomes a performative ritual, revealing recognition not as merit but as transaction.

As in much of de Meijer’s work, the figures operate as archetypes rather than portraits. They embody a structure in which loyalty and complicity intertwine, and where power circulates internally, insulated from external accountability. The painting exposes the choreography of influence — a quiet economy of reciprocity in which affirmation replaces scrutiny and recognition masks self-interest.
